Keeping Children Safe Within Families

Family Preservation

Family Preservation Programme

At St. Anthony?s we are very aware of the need to tackle the plight of abused and vulnerable children at grassroots level. We know that Prevention is always better than seeking a cure. We preserve the value of family life through Family Preservation - our Early Intervention and Prevention Programme operates in the local community of Blaauwbosch.

Intensive Family Support Project:

Providing support to families in crisis is the primary task of the Family Preservation Officers, Nonkazimulo Sithole and Thembisile Msibi. Families in need are identified through various means; self-referrals, referrals by schools and churches, and through community profiling. The Team makes regular home visits to aid in empowering the families and to link them with the relevant service providers. They help by providing the family with access to Social Grants, Identity Documents, enrolling their children in school and providing emergency food and clothing relief.

Between April 2010 and March 2011 the Family Preservation Team conducted over 200 home visits and worked with 106 different families.

Youth Holiday Project:

During the June Holidays 8 members of the staff facilitated a Youth Holiday Programme for 2O young people from Blaauwbosch. The young people were identified by the Family Preservation Team as being suitable for the programme which included sessions on: peer pressure, alcohol/drug addiction, child abuse, safety, resilience and sex education.

The holiday programme ran from 14-18th June and was deemed a great success by both the youth and the staff. One of the staff commented that ”after the success of this weeklong programme the children asked that they have a group running continuously and so we have set up the Youth Club groups where they can meet every week”...

Youth Groups Project: Simunye and Siyakhula

Since the success of the Youth Holiday Programme the young people have continued to meet and discuss issues such as social problems in their community, to learn life skills and to have counselling and play therapy. There are 2 groups which are conducted by Nonkazimulo and Thembisile: Simunye for the youth and Siyakhula for the children, with over 40 children attending every Wednesday afternoon in St. Anthony’s Centre.
School Readiness Project:

In order to ensure that the children in the Family Preservation Programme are enrolled in a school and own the appropriate school uniform, we have undertaken a School Readiness Project. In conjunction with local schools the Team monitors the children?s progress and provides support in their studies through Intensive Family Support.

From Dec. 2010 – Jan. 2011, 30 sets of school uniform were given to children through this Project.
